- To develop and implement a new fundraising model for the NGO PLAN
International/Childreach. This new approach, in which a company or organization sponsors a
specific educational project in Latin America, resulted in the funding of eight primary
school projects in five different countries by the end of the Expedition.
- To encourage the use of the Internet in developing economies by offering a
series of four-hour seminars to primarily Harvard alumni in Latin America, teaching them
about the impact of the Internet on business as well as how they personally can benefit
form this new medium, including the HBS On-line Alumni Resources and their life-long email
address. The seminars also serve to introduce HBS alumni to the work of PLAN/Childreach
and, through a charge for participation, provide funds for additional projects. The
seminar slides can be viewed in the 'Sensational Seminars' section of the website).
- To travel from Boston to Rio de Janeiro visiting and documenting the sponsored
projects while performing the mentioned seminars in major cities. The primary medium for
this publicity is the Expedition website which is being updated several times a week with
digital photos and travel tales. The website is designed to be an engaging, dynamic and
personal travel diary of the Expedition team, while also serving a nucleus for further
Internet exploration by Seminar participants. It is the hope of the Expedition team and
Childreach that the website will attract a broad audience and - in a non-intrusive way -
increase the general awareness of the work of the NGO.
